Hair Curling Iron Causing a Thermal Corneal Burn
Hair Curling Iron Causing a Thermal Corneal Burn
Contact thermal burns of the cornea can be caused by different items and mechanisms. This patient, a 23 year old previously healthy female patient presented to the ER with left eye pain and reduced vison after a direct injury while using a hair curling iron.
She was looking up and doing her bangs when the curling iron came in contact with her eye. Vision in the affected eye was 20/400 PH 20/20 and it was 20/40 PH 20/20 in the other eye.
Intraocular pressure was 18 in both eyes. The picture was taken with patient consent to follow up on the progression of her condition.
It is an external photo of the left eye showing 3mm horizontal burn wound of the corneal just above the visual axis. There was no fluorescein uptake.
Anterior chamber was deep and quiet. Posterior segment examination was unremarkable. The patient was treated with lubrication and moxifloxacin eye drops.
This is an interesting case of a curling iron causing thermal corneal burn and possible subsequent corneal astigmatism.
The picture was taken using the mobile phone directed on the eye piece of the slit lamp. The picture taken on 26 May 2021.
